Meet our Muse: The Pup Behind the Pages
Share
Hi, I’m Lizzy, co-founder of Wander Kid Books and dog mom to the real-life muse behind our first storybook star, Koda.
Before Wandering Paris was ever a book, there was Dakota, my scruffy little pup with big eyes, short legs, and an even bigger personality. She’s been by my side through thick and thin, from café mornings to cross-continent train rides, and she’s probably logged more international travel hours than most humans I know.

Dakota doesn’t just walk through a city, she owns it. Especially when she’s wearing her signature striped hat (yes, she actually wears it). Strangers stop us constantly to take her photo, ask for a cuddle, or just point and smile. It’s hard not to when you see a pint-sized pup strutting through Paris in a ballcap like she’s on her way to a fashion show.
But Dakota’s sense of adventure isn’t just for show. She once escaped Kelley’s house and literally went wandering by the Seine. She had to be rescued by the French police. You can't make this stuff up, though we definitely borrowed it for inspiration.
When it came time to dream up the character for our first picture book, there was no doubt: it had to be a dog. And not just any dog, one with charm, curiosity, and a slightly mischievous streak. Enter Koda: part tourist, part Jason Borne, and 100% inspired by Dakota’s spirit.
Working with our illustrator to bring Koda to life has been one of my favorite parts of this journey. From sketch to final art, we were obsessed with every ear flick and tail wag, making sure she felt like the same pup who once tried to become an actual Parisian.
And while Wandering Paris is just the beginning, Koda’s journey is far from over. She’s got her eyes (and nose) set on even more adventures around the globe.
Do you have a four-legged explorer too?
We’d love to meet them! Share your own dog’s travel snaps or neighborhood outings with #WanderWithKoda, and we might feature your pup on our page. Bonus points if there’s a hat involved.
